Trauma Focused CBT
Trauma Focused CBT (TF-CBT) addresses the challenges faced by children who are living with disorders resulting from early traumatic experiences such as grief, sexual abuse, physical abuse or violence.
Overcoming early trauma
This approach addresses the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and families suffering from the impact of early trauma. This treatment is a suitable option for children and young people who are living with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mood disorders resulting from grief, sexual abuse, physical abuse or violence. Because the client is usually a child, TF-CBT often brings non-offending parents or other caregivers into treatment and incorporates principles of family therapy.
This approach makes use of cognitive and behavioural techniques to help modify distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviours. Together we find ways to help the child reorganise their thinking in a healthier and happier way.
The needs of the family do not get overlooked in this approach. I appreciate how exhausting and worrying it can be to parent a child who has experienced trauma. For that reason a personalised approach will ensure that we incorporate the use of various stress management, communication and parenting skills.
Research comparing TF-CBT to other treatment models shows significantly greater gains in well-being for children and parents.

Flexible and inclusive
TF-CBT generally lasts anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions and I am able to work with children in their school, online, or in my private clinic.
Treatment takes place with a non-offending parent or caregiver. Initially sessions might be with the child only, with caregivers joining at a later stage in therapy.
